Charged-Particle Transport in anisotropic magnetic Turbulence

چکیده

Turbulence with an associated turbulent magnetic field is common in astrophysical environments. The determination of the transport of charged particles both parallel and perpendicular to the mean magnetic field is of considerable interest. Quasi-linear analysis or direct numerical simulation can be used to find the effects of the turbulent magnetic field on the transport of charged particles. A number of different magnetic turbulence models have been proposed in the last several decades. We present the results of studying particle transport in synthesized, anisotropic (Goldreich & Sridhar, 1995) turbulence and compare the results with those obtained using the standard isotropic turbulence model.

Particle acceleration and reconnection in the solar wind

An emerging paradigm for the dissipation of magnetic turbulence in the supersonic solar wind is via localized quasi2D small-scale magnetic island reconnection processes. An advection-diffusion transport equation for a nearly isotropic particle distribution describes particle transport and energization in a region of interacting magnetic islands [1; 2]. The dominant charged particle energization...

Whistler turbulence at variable electron beta: Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations

[1] Three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of whistler turbulence at three different initial values of ˇe are carried out on a collisionless, homogeneous, magnetized plasma model. The simulations begin with an initial ensemble of relatively long-wavelength whistler modes and follow the temporal evolution of the fluctuations as wave-wave interactions lead to a forward cascade into ...

Diffusive Shock Acceleration and Reconnection Acceleration Processes

Shock waves, as shown by simulations and observations, can generate high levels of downstream vortical turbulence, including magnetic islands. We consider a combination of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) and downstream magnetic-island-reconnection-related processes as an energization mechanism for charged particles. Observations of electron and ion distributions downstream of interplanetary ...

Generalized compound transport

The transport of charged particles in partially turbulent magnetic systems is investigated from first principles. A generalized compound transport model is proposed, providing an explicit relation between the mean-square deviation of the particle parallel and perpendicular to a magnetic mean field, and the mean-square deviation which characterizes the stochastic field-line topology. The model i...
